About the shop

Steady Steel Inc is a steel fabrication shop at 42 Wilstead Dr in Newmarket, Ontario. It has been running since 2018, independently owned, and it works across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area — structural and miscellaneous steel, aluminum and stainless, designed, cut, welded and installed.

What is in the building

Cutting, forming, welding and detailing are all under one roof in Newmarket, which is the reason a job with some of each in it does not move between shops and pick up a week doing it.

  • CNC fiber laser — sheet and plate on a 5 × 10 bed, narrow kerf and a square edge.
  • CNC plasma — the heavier plate the laser will not take.
  • Automatic bandsaw — structural and bar cut to length.
  • Bending and rolling — forming in the same building as the cutting.
  • Weld bays — MIG, TIG and stick on mild steel, stainless and aluminum.
  • The racks — steel, aluminum and stainless in stock and priced online, sold by the size and cut to length.

What we build

Lintels, stairs, railings, frames, dunnage, embeds and anchors. Shop-welded assemblies that go out on a truck, and non-pressure attachments bolted to customer equipment. Crews install on site, and welding and repair go into the field on machines that cannot come off it.

Work arrives as a drawing, a sketch, a DXF, a spreadsheet or a photograph of a list on paper. All five are normal. Anything the software cannot price with confidence goes to a person who calls back.

Drawing and design

Parts are modelled in SolidWorks and checked with FEA where it matters, then drawn for the shop with weld maps and piece marks on the sheets. Customers who would rather draw it themselves can use SteelForge, the shop's browser-based 3D steel designer — real AISC profiles, welds, holes and copes, priced as you build, with DXF and STEP out of the same model. It is free and needs no account.

What the shop does not carry is in-house weldment design engineering. Where a code requires a professional engineer to seal a design, that engineering is supplied by the customer or arranged as a separate scope, and we say so when we see it.

Certification

Steady Steel Inc is certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau. A certified shop welds to qualified procedures, with qualified welders, under CWB supervision, and is audited for it. The Letters of Validation in force today:

  • CSA W47.1 Div 2 — valid to June 2027
  • CSA W47.2 Div 2 — valid to April 2027

Division 2 covers the welding, not weldment design engineering. These letters and their expiry dates are published here and are the authoritative statement of what the shop holds.

Who runs it

Ken MacDermid owns Steady Steel and has run it since 2018. He is on the shop floor and he answers the phone, which is the short version of why quoting here tends to be a conversation about the drawing rather than a form. Reach him at 416 560 9330 or orders@steadysteel.org.
